Founded in 1967, the Civil War Token Society is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to stimulate interest and research in the field of Civil War token collecting. The Society publishes a journal (The Civil War Token Journal), conducts auctions, maintains a reference library, provides an attribution service for a nominal fee, establishes state chapters and conducting regional meetings. There are currently over 1,000 active members.
The Civil War Token Journal, a quarterly journal, is well illustrated and has data on patriotics, store cards, die sinkers, new dies, new varieties, merchants, auction prices, and die-a-grams. The purpose of the CWTS publication is to provide an exchange of information among the members. Each member is entitled to a free 25-word classified advertisement in The Civil War Token Journal.
Civil War Token Society members buy and sell their tokens in the club's quarterly mail auctions. The society charges the seller a 10% consignment fee, and the successful bidders pay the postage and insurance on their lots. Some members use display advertisements in the The Civil War Token Journal to conduct their own mail bid sales of Civil War Tokens.
The Society's library is open to all members. Reference books, articles, and auction catalogs with prices realized lists are available for study. Among the references in the library are Fuld's U.S. Civil War Store Cards and Patriotic Civil War Tokens. Also included with membership are special deals on the purchase of reference books.
